Semtech's LoRa Device is Used to Monitor the Safety of Ultra-marathon Participants

Everynet's geolocation solution can track participants in real-time and can respond quickly through button alarms, thus ensuring the safety of participants and the success of the event.

LoRa device monitor the safety of ultra-marathon participants

Semtech's customer Everynet uses Semtech's LoRa device and LoRaWAN standard positioning and tracking functions to monitor the safety of participants in the annual Tor des Géants ultra-long distance marathon in Italy.

Everynet is a network operator based on the LoRaWAN standard. It also provides network infrastructure, management platform, network operation and maintenance, and ecosystem partner solutions for the Internet of Things industry. Everynet has developed an application based on the LoRaWAN standard, which can track about 900 participants in real-time within hundreds of kilometers, and provide accurate data for event staff to prevent participants from getting injured and getting lost.

LoRa-The Tor des Géants ultramarathon

The Tor des Géants ultramarathon is one of the most challenging events in the world. Participants have to run a distance of 330 kilometers in less than 150 hours. The sections with varying altitudes exceed 24,000 meters. Participants have to run for a few days in a row, with a maximum break of 20 minutes each time.

Darkness, fatigue, cold, and altitude difference are all very dangerous factors. To deal with this kind of competition, not only must there be a very high level of training, but more importantly, there must be equipment to ensure the safety of the participants.

"Through the LoRaWAN-based network connection, Everynet can simply and effectively provide network coverage for the entire Tor des Géants area, including complex terrain, without the need for additional large-scale network infrastructure." said Antonio Terlizzi, Senior Vice President of Global Sales at Everynet "Combining the powerful network coverage function of the LoRaWAN standard with reliable tracking sensors can provide event organizers with accurate, consistent, and real-time data to ensure the safety of participants and help ensure the success of the event."

LoRa-based application

Event organizers chose Everynet's LoRa-based application because the venue is located in the mountains of Italy, and the cellular network cannot cover the track. As each participant is equipped with a LoRaWAN technology-based sensor, even in places where the cellular network cannot be accessed or covered, the athlete's position can be continuously monitored and an alarm signal can be sent in dangerous situations.

After using the Everynet application in the Tor des Géants event, the staff has been able to directly intervene in a variety of situations to ensure the safety of the participants.

Marc Pegulu, vice president of Semtech’s IoT business, said: "The successfully deployed network infrastructure is sufficient to cover the entire area of the Tor des Géants ultramarathon. This example proves that Semtech’s LoRa devices and LoRaWAN standards can be flexible and diversified in many scenarios and applications. Solutions based on LoRa devices can provide reliable and safe long-distance IoT applications for almost all application cases in vertical markets. LoRa devices simplify the development of the Internet of Things, enabling Semtech customers such as Everynet to provide high-value solutions plan to effectively meet market demand."
