What is a Schottky diode used for?

Schottky diodes are used as switches in fast-clamp diode applications. In this application, the base junction is forward biased. With Schottky diodes, the turn-off time is significantly reduced and the speed of the circuit is increased.

 

Why Schottky diodes are fast?

The small amount of charge stored within a Schottky diode makes it ideal for high speed switching applications. Less noise. The Schottky diode will produce less unwanted noise than your typical p-n junction diode.

 

What metal is used in Schottky diode?

A metal-semiconductor junction is formed between a metal and a semiconductor, creating a Schottky barrier instead of a semiconductor-semiconductor junction as in conventional diodes. The semiconductor would typically be N-type silicon and typical metals used are molybdenum, platinum, chromium or tungsten.

 

Why Schottky diode is unipolar?

The schottky barrier diode has electrons as majority carriers on both sides of the junction. So it is a unipolar device. Thus there is no depletion layer formed near the junction. It give very less voltage drop across the junction.

 

What is difference between Schottky diode and normal diode?

Schottky generally has lower reverse voltage max. You can easily find silicon diodes with 20-1400v ranges, while commonly schottky is 20v-60v. Schottky is extremely fast recovery, even faster than so-called “fast recovery” silicon diodes.
