Oscillator Fundamentals
What is an oscillator?
An electronic oscillator is an electronic circuit that produces a periodic, oscillating electronic signal, often a sine wave or a square wave. Oscillators convert direct current from a power supply to an alternating current signal. Oscillators are devices that convert direct current (DC) from a power source to alternating current (AC). They're found in a wide range of electronic devices, from simple clock generators to digital instruments (such as calculators) and complex computers and peripherals, among other things.
Oscillator Types
What are the types of oscillators?
There are a lot of different oscillator types, and they are manufactured in many forms, styles, lengths, girths, and from many materials, all with their own applications, characteristics and construction. Oscillators can also be classified into different types based on the parameters that are taken into account, such as the feedback mechanism, the shape of the output waveform, and so on.
There are many different types of oscillators, but they can be divided into two groups: Harmonic Oscillators (also called Linear Oscillators) and Relaxation Oscillators.
Oscillator Applications
What are the applications of oscillators?
Oscillators are a simple and inexpensive way to generate a signal with a specific frequency. For example, a Low-Frequency signal is generated using an RC oscillator, a High-Frequency signal is generated using an LC oscillator, and a stable frequency is generated using an Op-Amp based oscillator.
Oscillators are widely used in computers, instrumentation, digital systems, phase-locked loop systems, modems, marine, telecommunications, sensors and also in disk drives, and they are also used in engine controlling, clock and trip computer, stereo, and GPS systems.
